This stunning offering is handmade to perfection by potters based out of the French capital of India, Puducherry. The city is the hub of ceramic pottery. Nearly five decades ago, the modern world of pottery or stoneware began here and later spread to different parts of India. It all started in the 1970s when Deborah Smith who studied pottery in US, shifted to Puducherry to follow the spiritual guru, Sri Aurobindo. She set up craft shops and taught the locals the art of pottery. This led to the genesis of pottery in Puducherry. The relationship between hands and clay is the basis of this unique ceramic art form. The craft is poetry in motion – the way a potter moulds clay, giving it form, shape, and definition, is absolutely breath-taking! The potter drops a kneaded ball of clay with some force onto the centre of the wheel head. With a bowl of water, wet hands and clay on the wheel spinning, the bare hands give shape to formless clay, ultimately making beautiful pieces for daily use.
