THE STORY:
Pathi grass, also known as korai grass or kusha grass, is a type of sturdy and flexible grass that is commonly used for weaving baskets and other handicrafts in Bangladesh and many other parts of South Asia.
Pathi grass is chosen for its long and slender blades, which are dried and prepared for weaving. It is typically harvested during the dry season when the grass is at its peak.
The grass is then dried in the sun to remove any moisture. Once dried, the grass becomes more pliable and easier to work with. Thicker grass blades are used for the structural elements of the basket, while thinner blades are used for weaving. Dyes can be used to add colour to the finished baskets.
The weaving process usually starts with creating the base of the basket. This is done by taking a few thicker grass blades and forming a circular or oval shape. These blades are intertwined and tied together securely to form a stable foundation.
With the structural elements in place, thinner pathi grass blades are used for weaving. The weaving technique can vary, but a common method is a twining technique. In twining, the weaver alternates weaving the thinner grass blades in and out of the vertical supports. This creates a lattice-like pattern that gives the basket its strength and structure.
As the weaving progresses, the weaver continues to add more rows of weaving to increase the height of the basket's walls. The process requires patience and precision to maintain a consistent pattern.
Once the desired height is reached, the weaver finishes off the top edge of the basket. This can be done by folding and securing the pathi grass blades or by using a binding material like thread to secure the ends.
The process of weaving baskets using pathi grass requires skill, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of the material's properties. The resulting baskets are not only functional but also carry the cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the region
